This page was written in response to the frequently asked question: the difference between engine tuning and the Surbo.
Our latest Surbo research vehicle is a 2020 115 bhp turbodiesel Peugeot Expert 1.6 manual. Fitted with Surbo, it would hit the 5000 rpm rev limit with half accelerator pressure at only 1.5 bar of boost, compared with the usual 2.5 bar at full accelerator pressure on most other turbodiesels without Surbo. Likewise, our Surbo-equipped Peugeot 508 petrol turbo would red line at just 0.6 bar at half throttle, vs 1.2 bar at full throttle for another European car of similar capacity and power. Therefore, the Surbo protects your engine from overboost, due to inherently higher air density from the Surbo making the engine run ahead of the turbocharger.
The good news is, you can have both engine tuning and Surbo. We put the Surbo on the Golf GT of one tuner. The Surbo will lower the total pressure at the same performance level, so giving your engine a longer life. If you start with the Surbo, it gives more headroom for further tuning and upgrades. If your engine is already tuned, the Surbo can lower the engine stress that comes with overboost. Furthermore, the Surbo reduces turbo lag. Last but not least, the Surbo gives instant throttle response from standstill, which might be missing even in tuned cars. Contact us to try the Surbo on your car today!
